1. To move or wave, as a weapon; to raise, and move in various directions; to shake or flourish; as, to brandish a sword or a cane. It often indicates threatening.
Definition from Webster’s American Dictionary of the English Language, 1828.
Another war cry given on the heels of the first one, “Arise Ye Princes & Anoint The Shield!” http://spirit-wind.org/rise-up-ye-princes-and-anoint-the-shield/
What’s going on? I asked the Lord. Reminds me of a time when Jesus did something similar by giving me a series of nautical words and phrases all within a few days.
My sense is that He is telling me (maybe all believers) to get ready for a spiritual battle on a large scale. There would be no reason for Him to warn believers of the usual daily spiritual battles that we all face. So I assume there must be some special reason He’s dropping these battle cries into my spirit lately and I further could surmise that it may have to do with the battle in Ukraine AND what may come as a result. Or, it may have to do with something else entirely. It’s possible that our attention is being purposefully drawn away from something even larger looming on our horizon than the attack on Ukraine. It could be any number of things being planned for mankind by “the Prince of the power of the air” (Satan) and his minions, in unison with wicked world rulers.
So, what does “brandish our swords” have to do with us today? From the definition I get a picture of us waving our swords in the air, moving them in various directions (North, South, East & West perhaps?) and shaking them at our spiritual enemies! In the natural, loud shouts, waving of swords, and assuming threatening postures is done to intimidate the enemy by a show of strength and fearlessness. I think we often forget or don’t know how to wage war against our arch enemy Satan and his fallen ones. Instead of shaking our spiritual swords at Satan and his army, and shouting him down with praise and declaring victory over him, we allow him to intimidate us when it is we who should be intimidating him!
As the collective Body of Christ, I believe that if we raise and brandish (shake, wave) our spiritual swords, the words of God, at the Devil, we would see many more victories than defeats. One example of this is from the book of Chronicles –
2Ch 13:1 Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah.
2Ch 13:2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.
2Ch 13:3 And Abijah set the battle in array with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: Jeroboam also set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour.
[Verses 4-11 skipped for brevity’s sake. If you want to read them get your bibles out]
2Ch 13:12 And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.
2Ch 13:13 But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.
2Ch 13:14 And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind: and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
2Ch 13:15 Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
Another example is the battle of Jericho –
Jos 6:20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
See that? The people SHOUTED in unison, with a great shout and the wall fell down flat! Is there a wall that the Enemy has errected in your life to prevent YOU from taking the city? Which city you ask? Well, it could be the city where you live, where God has put you so you can “take it” for Him. Or, it may be a city that’s being invaded by wicked world rulers empowered by unseen demonic forces which needs to be taken back or away from them. The ‘city’ could even be a ministry or occupation that God has given you to keep watch over, and it may also be referring to New Jerusalem, the “city” of God that will come down from heaven as prophesied in Rev 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Has the Devil erected walls of fear, complacency, worldliness, materialism, self-preoccupation, and/or a sense of unworthiness and defeatism before you to keep you in a state of RETREAT?
In the movie “First Knight” when wicked Malagant and his army invade Camelot, King Arthur shouts to the citizens, “I say to you all, FIGHT! Never give up, never give up!”
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we should never retreat! The battle of the ages was won by Jesus at the Cross where our ancient Foe was defeated for all time. We need to know our Enemy and how to wage war against him effectively. The Devil, Satan, is a bluffer and a bully who takes advantage of our weaknesses but our Lord showed us the way to overcome his tricks. We take up the armor of God (Ephs. 6), anoint our shields and wave our swords (God’s words spoken from our mouths) at the Devil, and shout the shout of VICTORY when the trumpets sound! Who are the trumpeters but God’s messengers the priests, prophets and prophetesses?
Jos 6:16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.
In spiritual warfare there is a strategic moment to shout and one must wait for it – Jos 6:10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.
We need to understand that there’s a time for WAR, as the author of Ecclesiastes wrote, Ecc 3:8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. Dearly beloved, this is a time for war, not just in the physical, but in the spiritual realm. Battles on the ground and in the air, are won in the war room of our prayer closets! Remember, Satan is the Prince of the Power of the Air [Eph 2:2] and he and the fallen angels occupy the air or atmosphere around us.
Therefore ye princes, ye citizens of Jerusalem from Above, when you hear the sound of the trumpets and Jesus bids you to shout, then “Shout; for the LORD has given you the city!”
